Calow URC

Calow is a village just a few miles outside Chesterfield, almost half-way between Chesterfield and Carr Vale. Calow is host to the North East Derbyshire District Hospital just designated to be a Foundation Hospital.

The Church was founded in 1837 and serves a fairly stable local semi-rural community, though losing its village image through new housing developments. Although the church has a small congregation it is nevertheless an important part of village life. There are very good relationships with St Peters Anglican Church with regular exchange services. There are also joint services with Brimington Congregational Church some 2 miles away, and discussions with the local Methodist Church with a view to holding joint services are ongoing.

The Church Hall at the rear of the church, which has been recently updated to meet current guidelines, houses a unique set of painted biblical scenes and quotations. Painted in the early 20th century they illustrate scenes - chosen more or less at random - from the life of Christ and are very unusual.

Unusually the church has an adjacent operational burial ground.

A "Parent's Club" meets every Wednesday afternoon and is the real workforce of the church.

Coffee mornings are held once a month on Saturdays, occasional fêtes and bazaars are arranged, and a thriving Women's Institute meets on the premises.
